The six Mines students will serve as program ambassadors for humanitarian engineering and will seek out new opportunities for collaboration with faculty, alumni, corporations and non-governmental organizations.
The new research and educational collaboration between Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University and University of Arizona launched in June 2020.
“While there has been an emphasis on identifying and cleaning up drinking water impacted by PFASs, much less attention has been given to assessing risks from consuming produce irrigated with PFAS-contaminated water,” Mines PhD candidate Juliane Brown said.
Colorado School of Mines has entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Penn State University to establish a collaboration designed to be responsive in supporting the need for critical minerals
Through these projects and others, Mines faculty and students are giving Mines an upper hand in responding to the pandemic and its challenges.
“A growing number of engineers and scientists want to understand how their work can contribute to broad social and environmental goals," program director Jessica Smith said.
The former head of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department has served as the interim dean of EREP since July.
The Labriola Innovation Complex will include maker spaces, project team spaces, creativity and collaboration spaces, and design project classrooms — everything needed to imagine, design, prototype, and test new inventions, products and code.
The team of environmental engineering students took first place in the 2020 WEF Student Design Competition for a design to help Colorado Springs Utilities achieve compliance with new state regulations on effluent.
In addition to monitoring and listening to ambient noise including the local construction work, the class hopes to record local and distant earthquakes from around the globe.
