Land of Ice: Jaunts Into Colorado’s Glacial Landscape wins Colorado Book Award

Colorado Geological Survey book takes readers on exploration of state’s glacial past
Land of Snow and Ice

A book written by current and former Colorado Geological Survey geologists has been recognized with a 2025 Colorado Book Award.

“Land of Ice: Jaunts Into Colorado's Glacial Landscape,” written by retired Colorado State Geologist Vince Matthews and James McCalpin, senior geologist and paleoseismologist with the Colorado Geological Survey, was honored in the Guidance and Exploration category.

In the book, which features 600 color illustrations, Matthews and his time-traveling, mammoth-friend Buttercup lead readers through Colorado while helping them appreciate the glacial landscape that helps make the state special.

The book was published in October 2024, and Colorado Geological Survey graphic designer Larry Scott provided the graphic design for the book.

“Jim, Vince and Larry have created an outstanding work that brings this project to life,” said Matt Morgan, current Colorado State Geologist and director of the Colorado Geological Survey. “Their dedication to Colorado’s geologic story, attention to detail, and creative presentation make this book standout. This is a proud moment for CGS and a great example of the impact our team can have in public education and outreach.”
