Colorado School of Mines has been recognized by the Colorado Department of Higher Education for its work to support students’ essential needs so they can thrive in and outside the classroom.
Mines is among the inaugural cohort of institutions to receive the designation of Basic Needs Campus at the Comprehensive Campus level. The statewide designation recognizes institutions that have moved beyond foundational infrastructure to develop a robust, student-centered and equity-driven support ecosystem addressing a wide range of needs, including food, housing and mental health.
At Mines, all students have access to Blaster’s Basket, a food pantry that provides free food and toiletries to all Orediggers in need. Blaster’s Basket is often able to provide fresh meat, fruit and vegetables in addition to the non-perishable items that are always available, thanks to partnerships with Food Bank of the Rockies and the Roberts Family Initiative.
The Mines Counseling Center provides a multi-faceted system of services and programs that seeks to meet students where they are in the change process while promoting autonomy and empowerment. Staffed by licensed and experienced professionals, the center offers virtual office hours, 1:1 sessions, workshops and more, open to all students and all covered by student fees.
For students navigating personal and academic challenges, the Office of Student Outreach and Support (SOS) provides case management and resource connection. Case managers help identify needs, remove barriers and facilitate connection to campus and community resources. SOS can also refer students to the Student Emergency Fund, which provides immediate financial assistance for students facing difficult circumstances like the loss of a family member, natural disasters, unhealthy living situations, food insecurity or other emergencies.
The Basic Needs Campus Designation brings together state prior efforts, including the Hunger Free Campus and Healthy Minds Campus designations (both of which Mines received in 2022), into a single, streamlined framework. It is part of CDHE’s broader Social Determinants of Student Success initiative, which ensures students have access to the critical resources they need to thrive.
