Colorado School of Mines’ new Lookout Apartments bring sophomores on campus

All first and second-year students now live on the Colorado School of Mines campus, with the opening of Lookout Apartments, a new 800-bed apartment-style housing community for sophomores. 

The first student residents began moving into the building today, ahead of the start of Fall 2026 classes on Aug. 24.

The opening of Lookout Apartments marks a major milestone in Mines’ ongoing investment in student success and follows the recent expansion of The Village at Mines Park, an upper division and graduate student housing community that significantly increased the university’s on-campus housing capacity. Together, these projects provide students with more opportunities to live, learn and build community on campus throughout their academic careers.

“Lookout Apartments is a residential community designed from the ground up to enhance the student experience by providing modern living spaces that foster independence while keeping students closely connected to campus life,” said Braelin Pantel, vice president of student life at Colorado School of Mines. “We know that living on campus, especially during the first two years of college, makes a big impact on student success, retention and engagement, and we are so excited to be able to offer that experience to all second-year students starting this year.” 

Located on the south edge of campus at 1251 19^th St., Lookout enjoys sweeping views of South Table Mountain, Fossil Trace Golf Course and the Mines campus. Units are apartment style, fully furnished with full kitchens, allowing sophomore students to transition from traditional residence halls to more independent living.

Building amenities include:

• A 4,200-square-foot fitness center open to the entire Mines community with cardio, weight and resistance training equipment and two group exercise studios;
• A new dining option for campus, South Table Cafe, featuring Mediterranean bowls, build-your-own salads, breakfast sandwiches, burgers and other favorites;
• South Table Market, open 24 hours daily and filled with the necessities of apartment living;
• Many social and study spaces including an outdoor plaza, turf area designed to accommodate lawn games, fire pits and multi-use common areas on each level.

With the opening of Lookout Apartments, Mines has expanded its on-campus residency requirement from one to two years. "The ability to house and serve all second-year students positions Mines Residence Life, in partnership with our colleagues across Student Life, to engage our sophomore students intentionally where they live,” said Mary Elliott, Assistant Vice President of Student Life Auxiliary Services. “The professional and Residence Advisor staff aims to support professional development and help students prepare for experiential learning opportunities that become more relevant and important for their futures as they progress through their second year at Mines."
