Today, Mines is highly ranked in engineering, science, energy and environmental studies, and math, and it’s the toughest state university in Colorado to get into, with fewer than half of its applicants accepted.

Morgan Bazilian, director of Colorado-based Payne Institute for Public Policy, said Washington was much more likely to be a partner now than in the Trump era, but was still "pretty far from being fully on board."

M. Stephen Enders, head of the Colorado School of Mines’ Mining Engineering Department, said it’s unlikely that the United States could ever become a leading nickel producer due to a lack of reserves.

Some residents had levels of the chemical that were much higher, said Colorado School of Mines Professor Christopher Higgins, a lead researcher on the study.

“The designers will look at what are all the loads and situations that could conceivably exist over that 100- to 150-year time period,” said Michael Mooney, a professor at the Colorado School of Mines who focuses on underground construction and ....

“There’s no single place you can concentrate your effort because there are so many different watersheds that are potentially producing these mudslides or debris flow,” said Colorado School of Mines geologic engineering professor Paul Santi.

“This is a huge area to cover, and there are a lot of potential sources” of slides, said Paul Santi, a professor of geology and geological engineering at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden who has studied post-fire debris flows.
