Mines to host American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Rocky Mountain Section 4th Annual Technical Symposium Nov. 6

GOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 13, 2015 – Colorado School of Mines will host the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Rocky Mountain Section 4th Annual Technical Symposium on Nov. 6, 2015.

The AIAA Technical Symposium brings together pioneers in the aerospace industry, leaders in engineering education, and entrepreneurs of aerospace technology. Panel topics include the partnership of higher education and industry, new aerospace technologies, and initiatives taking place in the Rocky Mountain Region. More than 30 technical talks will be given by students and professionals throughout the day.

The Symposium’s keynote speaker is Alton D. Romig, Jr., executive officer of the National Academy of Engineering. Romig was formerly the vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Aeronautics Advanced Development Programs (colloquially known as Skunk Works), and executive vice president of Sandia National Labs. Known for his pioneering work in materials science, engineering and characterization, he has won numerous international prizes including the ASM Silver Medal for Outstanding Materials Research.

Speakers and panelists include Mike Hawes, Orion Program Manager and Lockheed Martin vice president, and Adm. Richard Truly, former NASA administrator, astronaut, Navy admiral, and member of the Mines Board of Trustees.

The symposium is sponsored by the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences at Mines, as well as Lockheed Martin, United Launch Alliance, Ball Aerospace, Deep Space Systems Inc., Advanced Solutions Inc., and other aerospace industry leaders.

Angel Abbud-Madrid, director of the Center for Space Resources at Mines and member of the organizing committee, considers this “a unique opportunity to showcase aerospace-related research and educational initiatives in the Rocky Mountain region. It will also make students aware of the importance of this industry in Colorado, the third-largest aerospace economy in the country.”

Registration is still available at ATS 2015.  For more information, contact the symposium chair, Tyler Franklin, at ATS2015@aiaa-rm.org
