Humanitarian Engineering and Science students tour a sustainable construction material plant in Colombia and learn about the importance of materials recycling in the Latin American construction industry.

Colorado School of Mines is expanding opportunities for returned Peace Corps volunteers through the new Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program, a joint partnership with the Peace Corps.

The program offers financial scholarships to qualified returned Peace Corps volunteers pursuing a Master of Science in Humanitarian Engineering and Science at Mines.

“We are honored to engage returned Peace Corps volunteers in our interdisciplinary program,” said Rich Krahenbuhl, director of the Humanitarian Engineering and Science Program. “We know they already have powerful insights into the successes and challenges of technology implementation in a global setting. Their presence on campus will enrich our community tremendously.”

Applicants selected as Coverdell Fellows for the full-time Master of Science in Humanitarian Engineering and Science will receive in-state tuition in accordance with Colorado law, a scholarship equal to 43 percent of the total tuition for the program, and opportunities to engage in hands-on projects with socially responsible public and private organizations.

The Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program began in 1985 at Columbia University and now includes more than 150 universities in the U.S. The program is designed for students who have successfully completed Peace Corps service abroad. The Coverdell Fellows Program at Mines is the first and only program offered by an applied science and engineering institution in Colorado.
