VIDEO: Bats are experts at navigating in the dark. What if mine rescue first responders were, too?
"Bat vision” for first responders would represent a major advancement in mine rescue technology. Andrew Petruska, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, tells us more in this video.
"Looking to nature, we're really inspired by how well bats are able to navigate through this kind of dark environment," he said. "So, we're also looking at how we can use acoustic sensors to image the environment. The capability that we're trying to give people in this environment — bat vision itself — is even beyond what maybe they would have even with their own eyes."
