Matt Morgan honored with national award for service to geosciences
Morgan is the State Geologist of Colorado and director of the Colorado Geological Survey

Matt Morgan, State Geologist of Colorado and director of the Colorado Geological Survey, housed at Colorado School of Mines, has been honored with the 2025 Presidential Award from the Association of American State Geologists (AASG).
The award was presented by Jessica Moore, current AASG President and State Geologist of West Virginia, during the organization’s annual meeting in Baton Rouge. Bestowed at the discretion of the AASG President, the award recognizes extraordinary service to the geosciences and to the objectives of AASG.
“I’m extremely honored to receive this award and truly humbled by the recognition,” Morgan said. “It’s been a privilege to work alongside such dedicated colleagues from across the country. Advancing the mission of AASG and supporting the geosciences is work I care deeply about, and I’m grateful to be part of this community.”
Morgan will assume the role of AASG President on July 1, 2025. In this leadership role, he will continue to advocate for the vital work of state geological surveys, promote collaboration across agencies and institutions, and advance geoscience initiatives that support public safety, sound resource development, and informed decision-making.
