Orediggers left their mark on Golden’s 1968 time capsule

Fifty years ago, Golden residents buried a time capsule in front of City Hall, next to the city’s Liberty Bell, with instructions that it be opened on Nov. 11, 2018.

It was the city’s second time capsule, the first buried in 1918 to commemorate the end of World War I and opened 50 years later on Nov. 11, 1968.

Flash forward to today, and Veteran’s Day 2018. As part of the city’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, officials unearthed the 1968 time capsule and discovered a treasure trove of documents that tell the story of Golden, Colorado, as it was 50 years ago.

Colorado School of Mines — a Golden institution since 1874 — is an important part of that story, and Orediggers of yore made sure the time capsule included plenty of Mines memorabilia.

Among the Mines-related items that the Golden History Museum curators found inside the time capsule:
  • Colorado School of Mines Bulletin
  • Edgar Mine brochure
  • 1968-1969 General Catalog
  • Professional Contributions of the Colorado School of Mines leaflet
  • Constitution of the Colorado School of Mines Dames Club and member directory. Founded in 1926 under the sponsorship of the faculty dames organization, the club furnished opportunities for the wives and mothers of students to socialize.
The time capsule and selected contents will be on display at the Golden History Museum through the end of April.  The new time capsule, to be opened in 2068, will be buried in 2019 and the museum is currently accepting submissions.
