GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 16, 2015 – To celebrate National Engineers Week, area high school students will explore science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM) at a Colorado School of Mines event sponsored by Lockheed Martin on Feb. 26.

Students from the Denver School of Science and Technology, Lakewood High School and Warren Technical School, will tour and participate in engineering activities in several Mines centers including the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy, Geology Museum, Center for Space Resources, Advanced Water Technology Center, Renewable Energy Materials Research Science and Engineering Center and Colorado Fuel Cell Center.

Avionics Integrated Product Team Director for the Orion Program Paul Anderson, EE ‘85, will welcome students before roundtable sessions begin and provide a brief presentation on the Orion program and recent EFT-1 flight. Lockheed Martin engineers will be on hand during a mentoring lunch, exposing students to engineering programs and careers.

“We’re hiring highly skilled technicians, scientists and engineers at every level to help support our growing operations in Colorado,” said Armando Castorena, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company vice president of human resources. “By partnering with the Colorado School of Mines and local high schools, we hope to inspire the students to pursue STEM careers and help us send humans to Mars on the Orion spacecraft, ensure our national security and launch 3D printed satellites into space.”

National Engineers Week is Feb. 22-28. The event aims to celebrate how engineers make a difference in our world, increase public dialogue about the need for engineers and bring engineering to life for kids, educators, and parents.
