Lockheed Martin and Mines to celebrate National Engineers Week

GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 15, 2013 – Nearly 100 area high school students will converge on the Colorado School of Mines campus Feb. 19 to experience “a day in the life of engineers” in celebration of a National Engineers Week event sponsored by Lockheed Martin.

Students will engage in hands-on learning regarding engineering and research and will get to tour Mines’ Center for Space Resources, the Colorado Fuel Cell Center, the Renewable Energy Materials Research Science and Engineering Center and the Mines Geology Museum. Mines students and local high school students will also connect with mentors from Lockheed Martin’s Space Systems Company division, based in Littleton, Colo., during a special mentoring luncheon designed to encourage and inspire engineers and scientists of the future.

“The demand for high-quality science and engineering talent has never been greater, and we are committed to inspiring future generations to pursue careers in these fields,” said Armando L. Castorena, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company vice president of human resources. “We need more scientists and engineers to help expand our knowledge of the universe, ensure our national security, and maintain our economic and technological leadership in the world. Meeting this strategic talent need is of critical importance to our nation and industry.”

National Engineers Week runs Feb. 17-23. The event aims to shine a spotlight on the contributions of engineering in our everyday lives and to draw attention to the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
