GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 19, 2013 – The second Biennial Intercollegiate Mine Emergency Response Development exercise (MERD) will be held Feb. 21-23 at the Colorado School of Mines Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs, Colo.
Three Mine Rescue Teams from Mines will host teams from the University of British Columbia and the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
A MERD is a mock mine disaster where teams practice mine rescue skills in a realistic setting. It will include a field problem, technician test, first aid test, and practice on the Colorado School of Mines Mine Safety and Health Program's mine rescue computer simulator.
The first intercollegiate MERD was held in 2011 at the Edgar Mine and four schools participated in the event: Colorado School of Mines Silver and Blue, Penn State, University of British Columbia, and the University of Arizona.
For additional information including schedules and guidelines, see the Mine Rescue Team website.
