LAIS professor publishes second revised edition of encyclopedia

The second revised edition of LAIS Professor Carl Mitcham’s "Encyclopedia of Science, Technology, and Ethics" (4 volumes, Macmillan Reference, 2005) has just been published as "Ethics, Science, Technology, and Engineering: A Global Resource" (4 volumes, Macmillan Reference, 2014), co-edited with J. Britt Holbrook, Georgia Institute of Technology. The second edition has contributions from a number of other LAIS faculty: Hussein Amery, Tina Gianquitto, Kathleen Hancock, James Jesudason, Jon Leydens, Juan Lucena and Barbara Olds. Other Mines-connected contributors include former postdocs Wang Nan (University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Zhu Qin (now at Purdue University) and graduate students Marc Rubin (SmartGeo Fellow) and Brian Zaharatos (Applied Mathemathics and Statistics). Davis appointed Coulter Chair in Mineral Economics

Division of Economics & Business Professor Graham Davis has been appointed as the Coulter Chair in Mineral Economics. The Coulter Chair is supported by the Viola Vester Coulter Foundation, a Colorado nonprofit corporation organized for the advancement of charitable purposes. The Coulter Chair in Mineral Economics is intended to enrich the educational experience associated with the study of mineral economics at Colorado School of Mines, advance the profession of mineral economics through research and education, and provide for a growth in career development for the chair holder that further advances the mission of Colorado School of Mines. Geophysics research professor receives 2014 Maurice Ewing Medal

Norman Bleistein, university emeritus, research professor of geophysics and former director of the Center for Wave Phenomena, will receive the 2014 Maurice Ewing Medal. The medal is given annually by the American Geophysical Union to one honoree in recognition for "significant original contributions to the scientific understanding of the processes in the ocean; for the advancement of oceanographic engineering, technology, and instrumentation; and for outstanding service to the marine sciences." Established in 1974 and jointly sponsored with the United States Navy, the Ewing Medal is named in honor of Maurice Ewing, who made significant contributions to deep-sea exploration. Announcement

Mechanical engineering student featured in German mining industry magazine

Undergraduate Melissa Anderson (ME) was featured in the German mining industry magazine, "Steinkohle," following a visit to Prosper Haniel Mine where she collected information for a term paper on mine rescue rescue practices in U.S. coal mines compared to those in Germany. She met Professor Jürgen Kretschmann, president of Bochum University of Applied Sciences, at the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and was invited to do an internship in Bochum this summer. She is a long-time member of the Colorado School of Mines Student Mine Rescue Team and serves as president of the SME Student Chapter at Mines. Announcement

Graduate student awarded NVIDIA Best GPU poster award

Doctoral candidate Vivek Bharadwaj, working under professors Tony Dean and Mark Maupin (CBE), was awarded the NVIDIA Best GPU poster award at the 248th National ACS meeting in San Fransisco. He presented his research on “Unraveling the fumarate addition reaction in the glycyl radical enzyme Benzylsuccinate Synthase.” Announcement

Professor awarded AiChE Education Division’s 2014 Award for Innovation in Chemical Engineering Education

Matt Liberatore (CBE) was awarded the AiChE Education Division’s 2014 Award for Innovation in Chemical Engineering Education. He was recognized for “developing innovative pedagogical methods including web-based tools such as YouTube Fridays and personalized online homework that resonate with this generation’s students.” The award recognizes an individual who has implemented a pedagogical innovation into a class or course that has made a significant and documented positive impact on teaching effectiveness and has enhanced student learning.
