Pylypenko organizes 37th Annual Symposium on Applied Surface Analysis

Assistant Professor Svitlana Pylypenko (CH) organized the 37th Annual Symposium on Applied Surface Analysis, held at Mines June 2-4. Sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Vacuum Society and the AVS Applied Surface Science Division, the symposium included presentations and posters surrounding the application of traditional surface analytical techniques, their development, data analysis, and sample preparation. Mines faculty who gave presentations at the event included Pylypenko, Associate Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Brian Gorman, and Chemical and Biological Engineering Professor Colin Wolden. Brennecka awarded Du-Co Ceramics Young Professional Award

Assistant Professor Geoff Brennecka (MME) has been awarded the Du-Co Ceramics Young Professional Award from the American Ceramic Society. The award is given to a member under the age of 40 and in the first 10 years of his or her career, "who demonstrates exceptional leadership and service to ACerS.” Brennecka will receive his award at the ACerS Honors and Awards Banquet on Oct. 5 in Columbus, Ohio. Skokan retires after 49 years

Dr. Catherine Skokan earned her bachelor’s, master’s and PhD in Geophysical Engineering from the Mines Geophysics Department. She joined that department in 1975 and continued until 1996, when she joined the engineering department as a tenured associate professor. She continued this position until 2010 and then became a member of the research faculty, regularly working on educational outreach projects with the Trefny Institute for Educational Innovation. Skokan has served Mines in many capacities, traveling extensively with the McBride Honors Program, the Humanitarian Engineering Program, Senior Design and the Music Program. She has traveled around world as a Mines representative for Semester at Sea and as an invited speaker as a Road Scholar. Dr. Skokan has received many distinctions including Outstanding Young Woman in America Award, Outstanding Professor in Geophysics, Excellence in College Teaching from the Colorado Association of Science Teachers, Alfred Jenni Fellowship Award for Educational Scholarship, Ange Melaragno Service Award for Outstanding Contribution to the McBride Honors Program, and the Gold Award from the Engineering and Environmental Geophysics Society.  Announcement

Lucena receives ASEE’s 2015 Sterling Olmstead Award

Professor Juan Lucena (LAIS) received the ASEE’s 2015 Sterling Olmstead Award. The award "honors those who have made distinguished contributions to the development and teaching of liberal arts in engineering education. Van Tyne elected Fellow of the ASM International Society

Professor Chester J. Van Tyne (MME) has been elected Fellow of the ASM International Society. The honor of Fellow represents recognition of his distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering, and develops a broadly based forum for technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society. His citation reads: "For significant contributions to understanding effects of processing and microstructure on the plastic deformation behavior of steels and nickel-based alloys in metal forming manufacturing processes." Snieder receives award from Alexander von Humboldt foundation

Professor Roel Snieder (GP) received a research award from the Alexander von Humboldt foundation. He was lauded for his “seminal work on seismic interferometry paved the way for a new branch of exciting techniques and applications that opened up the diffuse part of the elastic wave field for systemic analysis.” Announcement

Moore accepts awards on Mines’ behalf from American Society of Engineering Education

Dean Kevin Moore (CECS) accepted awards on Mines’ behalf from the American Society of Engineering Education in recognition of Mines "Outstanding Achievement in Recruiting the Most New Professional Members" and for "Achieving the Highest Percentage of Faculty Membership in the Rocky Mountain Section."
