State Magazine, a monthly publication of the U.S. Department of State, recently featured a photo of a Colorado School of Mines research project as part of an article about the U.S. Embassy’s efforts to tackle illegal gold mining in Peru. Nicole Smith, a cultural anthropologist and assistant professor of mining engineering, is the primary investigator on the State Department-funded project, which is working with artisanal and small-scale gold miners in Peru to implement cleaner and safer ore-processing technologies.
